| GROUP NEWS | ARMCHAIR TRAVEL GROUP: |
On 25th July, the group travelled with Nick Dibben on an entertaining tour of the North of Rural Romania, from towns and villages with incredibly decorated wooden churches, to rolling countryside, through forests, and up hills, and up more hills, where time seemed to have stood still (and Nick sometimes wished he had been able to).
After a break for a chat over tea, coffee and biscuits, the group then discussed three members’ 5-minute travel ‘Postcards’ giving memories of:
Touring China with Bill Rayner’s Cloisonnes Penguin;
The Sights, and Smells, of Iceland with Kathy Percey’s Travel Report; and
Trekking through Peru to Machu Picchu with Julia Stevens’ Peruvian Lizard Stick.
Thanks to all for great stories... You just had to be there to appreciate them all!
We also discovered how best to entertain the group in future and to keep members’ attention: Just chat naturally about travel you’ve enjoyed... and carry a big stick!
The next group meeting will take place on Thursday, 22nd August 2024, at 2pm at the St Denys Church Hall, Market Place, Sleaford for a presentation by Bill Rayner based on his River Cruise along the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar, which promises to continue the series of entertaining presentations we’ve enjoyed so far - and of course, there will be the unexpected joys of members’ postcards!
We would love for you to join us on our Armchair Travels. If you would like more details of the group and upcoming meetings, or about presenting your travel story as a presentation or ‘postcard’, please contact the Armchair Travel Group Leader.
| GROUP NEWS | BRITISH HISTORY GROUP: |
At the last meeting on Monday, 22nd July 2024 the group met at the Barge & Bottle to hear a talk by Phil Self about The Slavery Abolition Movement and the Work of Thomas Clarkson. The talk entertained not only u3a members, but also pub customers, after issues with the usual meeting room and AV equipment required our relocation to the main bar area.
Some information on Thomas Clarkson can be found here:
The next scheduled meeting on Monday, 26th August 2024 has been cancelled due to the Bank Holiday.
The next group meeting will now take place on Monday, 23rd September 2024, at 2pm at the Barge and Bottle, for a presentation by Angela Rankin on aspects of Victorian Philanthropy - There are rumours that chocolate may make an appearance.
A Group Visit to the National Trust’s Southwell Workhouse property (at a date to be confirmed) in advance of the September meeting is in the process of being arranged to support the Victorian Philanthropy theme.
“Please sir, can we have some more?”
If you would like more details of the group and upcoming meetings and visits, please contact the British History Group Leaders.
